Simon Jersey staff in peak condition for grueling challenge
May 2009
Staff
at hospitality and catering uniform specialist Simon Jersey are limbering up for
the CARE International Three Peaks Challenge in September, when they hope to raise
more than £6000 for the charity.
Led by logistics manager Michael Lancaster, the team of trekkers hope to scale the
three highest mountains in the UK in just 24 hours and are calling on businesses
to donate or help in any way they can.
CARE International is one of the world's top three aid agencies, fighting poverty
and injustice in over 70 countries around the world and helping 65 million people
every year.
The charity organises a series of fund raising events throughout the year and the
team at Simon Jersey opted for the classic challenge, which they completed in 2006
in 23 hours and 26 minutes.
They will start on Saturday 12th September with an afternoon hike up Ben Nevis in
the Scottish Highlands. Then it will be down to the Lake District for an early morning
ascent up Scarfell Pike and the final hurdle, Mount Snowdon in North Wales, will
be tackled on Sunday afternoon.
Nine employees are currently taking part in training that includes weekly hikes
up Pendle Hill and a grueling schedule that will see them scaling mountains such
as Helvellyn in the South Lakes and Pen-y-Gent in the Yorkshire Dales.
Practice on the three peaks will also take place in the coming months to hone their
skills and set time targets.
The climbers are Andrew Cottram, Craig Hull and Waren Spencer from marketing, Gareth
Wilkinson and Keil James from logistics and field sales representative Joanne Holden.
Supporting the team and taking part in the training are Michael Lancaster and Robert
Jackson from logistics and Pauline Lancaster from PD tech.
Michael Lancaster said: "We are all very excited about the challenge ahead and everyone
is working very hard.
"The challenge is not an easy task and with an estimated driving time of 10
hours we only have 14 remaining to do the actual climbing."
"It will be more than worth the effort if we hit or exceed the £6000 target
and we really do need the help of the local community and businesses in the area."
