Salon Wear
Nov 2010
It's less than ten days since the news story of the year broke and the high street is already full of Kate Middleton inspired fashions – most notably the flattering blue Issa dress she wore on television to announce her engagement to Prince William. Within what felt like minutes Tesco's F&F produced it's own £16 version and replicas are soon to be released in Coast and Lipsy. Ever since we saw her strut her stuff down the Catwalk while still a university student we had a feeling Kate was going to be making an impact on fashion, and now the high street has spoken; Kate's understated style is the one to watch and the look we're all going to be channelling in 2011.
In salon wear terms she's a fabulous role model if you want to promote a chic and timeless feel for your salon. And does that girl know how to do classic. Never one for loud, flashy or too-trendy styles, Kate Middleton has managed to quietly establish herself as one of the UK's newest style icons and her star is surely set to keep on rising. Think ladylike on the knee-skirts, crisply ironed shirts and smart jackets in a contemporary colour palette of chocolate, monochrome with the odd rich plum, mustard and blue. Whatever salon wear style you select make sure your separates are tailored to perfection. Nothing says class quite like immaculately cut and finished salon wear, so look for adjustable hems on trousers and elasticated waists that can be hidden under tunics and shirts.
The key to Kate's look is in her attention to detail. You need to be tirelessly devoted to the finer points of style to pull off classic elegance. Nails perfectly manicured, hair shiny and healthy, shoes polished and not too high, and accessories pitched just right; subtle pieces in classic designs, nothing too flashy and nothing too bold. And to top it all classic style needs to be worn with an effortlessness that looks like you haven't really tried too hard. No-one said this was going to be easy!
When it comes to promoting your brand you don't have to be loud in order to make an impact. In recreating Kate's classic style you could try experimenting with personalised salon wear A subtle embroidered badge can add an element of distinction to your salon wear and establish your business in an over crowded market place. Alternatively a sewn in tab looks stylish and understated while still achieving the same results.
For those of us who don't have a royal sized entourage to keep our salon wear clean, pressed and feeling fresh you could always cheat a little. Look out for fabrics that are designed to cope with your working environment. There's lots of stain resistant and wipe clean fabrics on the market at the moment that look and feel fantastic. Intelligent fabrics have come a long way since the 1980s and instead of crunchy, shiny Teflon coatings you can find gently treated cottons that are soft to the touch and comfortable to wear. No-one will be able to tell the difference. And your secret will be safe with us.
