Story Of Our Design

the brief

We were challenged with creating a stylish suit for Team GB to wear at formal events in the UK and Rio, as well as an outfit to celebrate their most successful ever away Games at Rio 2016.

Great uniforms have the power to flatter a wide range of body shapes, help build team spirit and create a winning mentality - all the features that Team GB needed to inspire them to success.

what we did

Our designers' starting point was the colours, fabrics and styles that could reinforce Team GB's medal-winning reputation. They also took into account symbols and logos associated with Team GB and investigated the best ways to incorporate them into the design. Initial concepts were presented to The British Olympic Association including officials, current and former athletes to ensure both outfits ticked all of the right boxes to help the team look and feel their very best.

Once the garments were approved, samples in vast array of sizes were created ready for testing on the athletes themselves. The Simon Jersey team toured the UK meeting nearly 300 athletes to ensure that we had the perfect fit for every athlete - no matter their size.

It's the same collaborative approach we apply to all of our customers to ensure we develop a uniform that everyone looks and feels great wearing.

Team GB said

“Simon Jersey have done a fantastic job designing our formal wear for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games."

“Team GB will be around 350 athletes strong in Rio so to design a suit that not only looks great but fits every team member- from a 5ft4 gymnast to a 6ft5 boxer is no mean feat."

“We had fabulous feedback from athletes during the sizing sessions that took place around the country and with the good luck messages sewn into the lining I am sure that the team will wear their suits with pride.”

#MyOlympicWish

We asked the nation's children to send us their messages of support to include in Team GB's suits for Rio 2016 so that the athletes feel all the support from back home. Our ambassador, Beth Tweddle, launched the competition and 10 have now been chosen to be featured in the lining of the jackets.

Check out our video of when the children met the athletes and saw their messages below...

SJ WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE WORKING WITH TEAM GB?

HH It's a huge honour to be chosen to design the suit and closing paradewear for Team GB. They're athletes at the very top of their sports and we can't wait to see them wearing our designs.

SJ WHAT WERE THE MAIN CHALLENGES IN DESIGNING FOR TEAM GB?

HH There's really wide range of body shapes in the team, from petite to tall and muscular. But it's the same as working with any of our other national and international clients and it's our job to create a design that flatters everyone.

SJ WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE DESIGNS?

HH We wanted designs that everyone would feel confident wearing. We're chosen on-trend, slim fitting pieces included touches of red, white and blue in the accessories.

We're also focused on the detail to give a high quality feel, including embossing the lion's head logo on buttons and belts, and adding gold finishing touches as a reminder of the team's sucess from London 2012.

SJ WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO FROM RIO 2016?

HH The key moment for me will be seeing Team GB walking out wearing our designs in the closing parade on 21st August! I wish the athletes every success in Rio and everyone here is right behind them.
