Our relationship with Team GB began back in 2014 when Simon Jersey was appointed as the official formal wear provider, designing and supplying suiting to all athletes to wear for all press events pre and post-games, and to formal events whilst at the Olympic games. Simon Jersey kitted out the hugely successful team for the best ever performance at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics with suiting and formal outfits for the Olympic closing ceremony – including the famous red, white and blue flashing shoes.Providing the formal wear for the Team GB athletes has been a huge honour for us and has put our bespoke design, production and account management skills to the test to be able to offer this prestigious uniform contract.
In 2018, Simon Jersey provided formal wear to the largest and most successful Team GB to date, of over 200 strong athletes for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics games. Our designers at Simon Jersey have worked closely with the Athletes Commission come up with the ideas for the garments that the athletes wore for the formal events and the closing ceremony at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. For Rio and Pyeongchang, athletes wore garments specially developed as part of our contemporary suiting range, which were uniquely made for the games by adding the colours of the British flag, and a subtle Team GB logos.
The male athletes wore the contemporary slim fit jacket in blue and the matching waistcoat, with a white shirt and a woven red tie that has the Olympic rings and lions head emblazoned on it. The female athletes were dressed in a red three-quarter wrap top, with slim leg trousers in blue and matching jacket. Our contemporary suiting range is designed with Poly Viscose material that provides comfort and flexibility, but also stands the test of time. This exciting collection adds a touch of sophistication to our national teams presentation. In addition to the suiting we also created the full outfit that athletes wore in the fantastic closing ceremony parade.
The inspiration for the designs came from Rio’s reputation as the home of the carnival, as well as the vision for Tokyo 2020, which is about adopting new technologies into the Olympic Games.
The back of the jackets worn in the Rio closing ceremony featured an intricate embroidery of the Team GB lion’s head logo. Within the mane was a ‘thank you’ message to Brazil in Portuguese, as well as a ‘hello’ to Tokyo in Japanese for that personal touch. All athletes also had a white jacket, featuring a lion’s head design made up of 45,766 individual stitches.
Simon Jersey also developed the hugely popular flashing sole shoes for the athletes to really stand out at the closing ceremony, creating a talking point and memorable footwear design. The red, white and blue flashing lights were a huge hit, and we can’t wait to get the Olympic buzz back at Simon Jersey as we approach the 2020 Olympic games. To create appropriate suiting for the Team GB athletes, from petite gymnasts to Amazonian rowers, is no mean feat, but it’s what we do for our customers every day – uniting teams of any size across the globe through our designs.
